Tattoo Pricing Guide Melbourne

A clear explanation of how custom tattoos are estimated, what changes the price, and how sleeves, full-day sessions and deposits are planned.

How tattoo pricing works

Tattoo pricing reflects the time and skill required to design, prepare and apply a piece safely—not only the minutes spent tattooing. Reference review, custom composition, stencil preparation, placement adjustments, setup and the session itself all form part of the work.

Small, straightforward tattoos may be estimated as a shorter appointment. Detailed realism, Chicano work, cover-ups, sleeves and large compositions are normally planned by session because the body, design and existing tattoos affect how much can be completed responsibly in one sitting.

What changes the price?

The most useful estimate comes from looking at the complete project rather than applying a generic price per centimetre.

  • Overall size and body placement
  • Level of realism, detail and contrast
  • Whether the design is new work, a rework or a cover-up
  • How much custom drawing and composition are required
  • How well the area can be positioned during the session
  • Whether the project needs one appointment or several

Sleeves and large-scale projects

A sleeve is a connected composition, not a collection of unrelated hourly prices. Cost depends on whether it is a half sleeve or full sleeve, the amount of skin being covered, the density of the design, existing tattoos and how many sessions are needed to keep the work consistent.

Large projects are usually divided into planned stages. This makes the design easier to manage, protects the quality of each area and spreads the work across appointments. Read the dedicated sleeve guide for the complete planning process.

Full-day and multi-session bookings

A full-day session is useful when a larger area benefits from uninterrupted progress, but it is not automatically the best format for every tattoo. Placement, detail, stamina and the condition of the skin all influence how long a productive session should be.

Multi-day or closely scheduled sessions can sometimes help interstate and overseas clients. They are only recommended when the design and body area allow it. Travel plans should remain flexible until Joshua confirms the exact appointment structure.

Deposits and booking security

A deposit is required to secure an accepted project and appointment. The amount is confirmed with the booking details because it can vary with the planned session. Do not send money until official payment instructions have been provided.

Deposits are non-refundable. With at least 48 hours’ notice, they may be transferable under the written terms supplied with the booking. Late cancellations, missed appointments or major changes to the agreed project may affect the deposit.

Can you receive an estimate online?

Yes, many projects can receive an initial estimate online when the enquiry is complete. Cover-ups, sleeves and complex placements may need additional photographs or a consultation before the likely session structure can be assessed.

An estimate is based on the size, references and condition of the area shown at the time. If those details change substantially, the estimate may also need to change.

How to request an accurate estimate

Include enough information for Joshua to understand the whole project in one review.

  • Your main idea and the elements that matter most
  • Exact body placement and approximate dimensions
  • Clear, unedited photographs of the area
  • Reference images showing direction rather than tattoos to copy
  • Photographs of existing tattoos or scars in the placement
  • Preferred dates, travel limits and whether the project is urgent

Ready for a project-specific estimate?

Send the idea, placement, size and reference images through the booking form. Joshua will review the project and explain the most suitable next step.
